NO
DEMOCRACY AT THE ICAEW
Did you know that:
-
The ICAEW President, Deputy President and Vice-President
are not directly elected to their office by ICAEW members.
-
The ICAEW officialdom claims that the ICAEW Council elects
the leaders through a secret ballot, but it has failed to give anyone any
sight of the alleged ballot paper.
-
Some 25% of the ICAEW Council mmebers are not elected by
any member. The good and not so-great are nominated. Who said nepotism
does not exist?
-
The ICAEW has non-Uk members, but they are not represented
on its Council.
-
The ICAEW members are not allowed to elect the most powerful
person at the Institute - its Chief Executive.
-
The ICAEW boasts that its Council meetings are 'open' to
the public. In reality this is a PR exercise and a sham. The 'open' part
of the meeting is sometimes only 15-20 minutes. Then the public is thrown
out and the usual 'secrecy' prevails.
-
The minutes of the ICAEW Council meetings are neither available
to its members nor the general public.
-
The ICAEW does not owe a 'duty of care' to its members or
to any one else affected its policies even though under the Companies Act
1989 and the Insolvency Act 1986 it acts as a regulator.
-
No person of 'colour' has ever been nominated to be an officeholder
of the ICAEW. Why not?
-
Whilst the Army, the Police, the Law Society, the BBC, Marks
& Spencer and other undertake ethnic monitoring of staff and members,
the ICAEW does not. How can it develop any policies to help accountants
from ethnic minorities? The ICAEw underatkes ethnic monitoring of the new
student intake but has no policies for combating discrimination faced by
people of 'colour.
-
Unlike other professional bodies there is no Ombudsman to
resolve any conflicts between the ICAEW officials and its members. The
officialdom insists that its interpretation of bylaws is the only one and
members can do nothing about it.
