ACCA’S MAGAZINE IS EVEN POORER VALUE FOR MONEY

Isn’t it time to privatise the ACCA’s magazine ‘Accountancy & Business. Its quality is extremely poor. Some members have told AABA that it is only good for lining their rabbit’s hutch!!

The magazine rarely contains any worthwhile news or articles. It rarely publishes any critical articles or letters. Many members have already told the Association that they do not wish to receive it. They are not entitled to any refund. Members should have a choice of paying higher subs to receive the magazine or pay lower subs and choose not to receive the magazine.

With a captive audience, ACCA has no incentive to  improve the quality of its magazine. It is full of propaganda and photo opportunities for the self-elected leadership.

‘Accountancy’ published by the ICAEW is independent and has to earn surpluses for the ICAEW. It has to compete with other magazines to provide coverage of accountancy matters. In contrast, Accounting and Business has no independence. Rather than earning a surplus ACCA members pay the price for receiving the magazine which has been dubbed ‘Pravda’ (the former official paper of the Russian Communist Party).

The ACCA magazine does not even provide good technical coverage. For example, Accountancy publishes the full text of the latest accounting and auditing standards. Accounting & Business does not.

Other accountancy magazines make money. ACCA’s loses money. In 1999 the ACCA members subsidised the magazine by £810,000. The 1998 figure was £870,000.
